Name suggestions please.
Three Southern Resident orca calves born in 2011 will receive names this year. Only people who have adopted a whale can vote for a name, but I’m feeling uninspired right now, any ideas????
The calves are -
K-44 Male (mom is Deadhead, K-27)
L-117 Gender Unknown (mom is Ino, L-54)
L-118 Gender Unknown (mom is Nugget, L-55)
An interesting bit of trivia....
From The Whale Museum’s Cetus newsletter, explaining exactly how sonar kills whales and dolphins.
“Physical injury from sonar seems to occur via two routes. Necropsies of stranded animals associated with sonar events can show signs of ‘acoustic trauma’ which involves signs of trauma around the hearing mechanisms and gas filled cavities. This is thought to occur when an...

“Another much-neglected source of tension and anxiety which haunts the captive dolphin is incessant noise pollution, something which the animals are particularly susceptible to. From the constant racket of filtration pumps to the rhythmic booming of rock music, vibration and echoes are conducted so efficiently through the steel or concrete pool structures that dolphins may suffer almost...

One of the many endoscopes forcibly performed on Keto (seen here), Kohana & Skyla because they were ingesting the pool linings at Loro Parque out of frustration & boredom, & up until 2009, SeaWorld never made LP shut the main pool down in order to repair the damage caused by ignoring the instructions of the manufacturer, employing cheap, unskilled labor, & an...

Interview with Death at SeaWorld author.
Alex: After writing your book do you think it’s acceptable to keep Orca’s in captivity?
David Kirby: I have no problem, even as journalist, saying that after examining the evidence very carefully and very objectively, because I did not approach this as any kind of anti-captivity person, I just don’t see how you can come to any other conclusions. I just want people to ask themselves if they were a...

Orca captivity started in July 1964. 48 years ago. That’s it. Quite shocking, huh?
We are just breaking the surface on how to care for these animals. Plus, no new animal to captivity starts out well.
Cetaceans are a tricky animal to care for to begin with. To date we still lack important…

NO.
Bad people. Bad. *slaps on the wrist*
Ingrid Visser has had over 20 years experience diving with orcas. Those that she finds beached/dead, she performs the autopsies and analyses them. This isn’t just some hack job enthusiast, Ingrid Visser is a professional and to discredit her because she’s trying to study Morgan insults all the major scientific contributions she has...

Sorry....
Apologies for the lack of posts over the last few days. My Nan died last Tuesday and on Friday my Mum had a heart attack. She should be out of hospital either tomorrow or Wed, and my Nans funeral is on Friday, so hopefully things will be back to normal soon.
Thanks for understanding.

Someone asked a question:
“You can’t sedate an orca.”
Well, I don’t know how you’re sending me anon questions, I disabled it months ago but we’ll find out who you are as soon as I find the thing that track IP adresses from anon questions. ;)
About your question, tell it SeaWorld because according to their papers they sedate not only orcas, but other cetaceans, during AI...

Quote from a SeaWorld paper…
“Neurotic behaviour patterns have been observed to develop in cetaceans kept in isolation. They show erratic behaviour such as rolling in the water, ramming their heads against the side of the pool and even biting their trainer. This behaviour ceases when other animals are placed in the pool with them as companions”.

Of all the 199 total orcas that have been/are in captivity, not including stillborns and miscarriages, only 16 were captured for SeaWorld. SIXTEEN. From the impression activists give, you would think they captured all 199.

I really just don’t understand anti caps. I mean, I don’t understand what they expect us to do about the orcas in captivity now. Orcas have not been captured since the 1980s,
Only for American Parks. There have been quite a few recent captures and attempted captures. For example several attempts have been made in recent years to catch orcas in Russian waters. There was a whale...

I started a new blog.
It’s called Anti Captivity Quotes.
I had several pages of anti cap quotes saved on my computer but was at a loss with what to do with them. So I made a blog where I will post a new quote regularly.
If you have a quote that you would like to share, please feel free to send it to me and I will post it.
Thanks.

This is NOT good.
Why do they have to schedule the tests for just after the whales have returned. Seriously. They couldn’t have done these tests two months ago to reduce the risk of a death. Why is this legally allowed to happen in a critically endangered animals habitat?.
This ties back to the earlier discussion about Japan. Orcas have been in American Aquariums...

cetaceaninspiration:
“Japan is proof that displaying dolphins has no educational value because Japan is the size of California and has 50 dolphinariums — that’s more than all of Europe. And if it was educational then the largest slaughter of dolphins in the world would not be going on in Taiji.”
It’s weird, because for the last decade at least, Aquariums in Japan have done a lot of...

The City of Niagara Falls is considering selling the strip of land between Marineland and Portage Road. Jozu has apparently now died
“The last surviving false killer whale at SeaWorld has died.
SeaWorld officials told News 13 Jozu passed away late Monday afternoon.
Jozu was born at SeaWorld Orlando in 1994 and had a history of chronic health problems.
The cause of her death is not known at this time.
A necropsy is scheduled, but results won’t be known for a few weeks.
Jozu was a part of the Blue Horizons show,...
